UCLA Fall 2002, 2 Algebra, matrix similarity, rational canonical form, minimal polynomials

Determine, up to similarity, all 3Γ—3 matrices 𝐴 over β„š such that 𝐴2+2𝐴3+𝐴4=0 but 𝐴+𝐴2β‰ 0.

UCLA Fall 2002, 2 Algebra, commutative rings, comaximal ideals, Chinese remainder theorem

Let 𝑅 be a commutative ring with 1, and suppose 𝐼 and 𝐽 are ideals of 𝑅 such that 𝐼+𝐽=𝑅. Show that:

(i) 𝐼𝐽=𝐼∩𝐽,

(ii) 𝑅/(𝐼𝐽)≅𝑅/πΌβŠ•π‘…/𝐽.

UCLA Fall 2002, 3 Algebra, finite fields, irreducible polynomials, cyclotomic polynomials

Let 𝑝 be a prime integer such that 𝑝≑2 or 3 (mod5). Prove that the polynomial

1+𝑋+𝑋2+𝑋3+𝑋4

is irreducible over β„€/𝑝℀.

UCLA Fall 2002, 3 Algebra, Sylow theory, normalizers, finite groups

Let 𝐺 be a finite group and 𝑃 a 𝑝-Sylow subgroup. Let 𝑁𝐺(𝑃) be the normalizer of 𝑃 in 𝐺. Show that:

(a) 𝑃 is the unique 𝑝-Sylow subgroup of 𝑁𝐺(𝑃). (Do not quote a theorem that this is true!)

(b) 𝑁𝐺(𝑃) is self-normalizing in 𝐺.

UCLA Fall 2002, 3 Algebra, linear operators, rank-one operators, dimension bounds

Let 𝑇1,𝑇2,…,π‘‡π‘š be linear operators on a vector space of dimension 𝑛. Assume that

(i) dimim(𝑇𝑖)=1, and

(ii) 𝑇𝑖2β‰ 0 and 𝑇𝑖𝑇𝑗=0 for every 𝑖≠𝑗.

Prove that π‘šβ‰€π‘›.

UCLA Fall 2002, 3 Algebra, commutative rings, polynomial rings, units, nilpotent elements

Let 𝑅 be a commutative ring with 1, and let 𝑆=𝑅[π‘₯] be the polynomial ring in one variable. Let π‘“βˆˆπ‘†. If 𝑓 is a unit of 𝑆 (that is, 𝑓 is invertible in 𝑆), show that 𝑓 has the form 𝑓=𝑒+𝑔, where 𝑒 is a unit in 𝑅 and π‘”βˆˆπ‘† is a nilpotent element without constant term.

Let π‘˜ be a finite field of size π‘ž.

(a) Prove that the number of 2Γ—2 matrices over π‘˜ satisfying 𝑇2=0 is π‘ž2.

(b) Prove that the number of 3Γ—3 matrices over π‘˜ satisfying 𝑇3=0 is π‘ž6.

Let 𝑉 be a vector space over a field 𝐹, and let 𝐡:𝑉×𝑉→𝐹 be a symmetric bilinear form. This means that 𝐡 is bilinear and 𝐡(π‘₯,𝑦)=𝐡(𝑦,π‘₯). Let π‘ž(𝑣)=𝐡(𝑣,𝑣).

(a) Show that if the characteristic of 𝐹 is not 2 then 𝐡(𝑣,𝑀)=12(π‘ž(𝑣+𝑀)βˆ’π‘ž(𝑣)βˆ’π‘ž(𝑀)). (This obviously implies that if π‘ž=0 then 𝐡=0.)

(b) Give an example where the characteristic of 𝐹 is 2 and π‘ž=0 but 𝐡≠0.

(c) Show that if the characteristic of 𝐹 is not 2 or 3 and if 𝐡(𝑒,𝑣,𝑀) is a symmetric trilinear form, and if π‘Ÿ(𝑣)=𝐡(𝑣,𝑣,𝑣), then π‘Ÿ=0 implies 𝐡=0.

(a) Prove that if 𝐾 is a field of finite degree over β„š and π‘₯1,…,π‘₯𝑛 are finitely many elements of 𝐾 then the subring β„€[π‘₯1,…,π‘₯𝑛] they generate over β„€ is not equal to 𝐾. (Hint: Show they all lie in π’ͺ︀𝐾[1/π‘Ž] for a suitable nonzero π‘Ž in π’ͺ︀𝐾, where π’ͺ︀𝐾 denotes the integral closure of β„€ in 𝐾.)

(b) Let π”ͺ be a maximal ideal of β„€[π‘₯1,…π‘₯𝑛] and 𝐹=β„€[π‘₯1,…,π‘₯𝑛]/π”ͺ. Use (a) and the Nullstellensatz to show that 𝐹 cannot have characteristic 0, and then deduce for 𝑝=char(𝐹) that 𝐹 is of finite degree over 𝔽𝑝 (so 𝐹 is actually finite).

Let 𝐺 be a finite group.

(a) Let πœ‹:𝐺→GL(𝑉) be an irreducible complex representation, and let πœ’ be its character. If π‘”βˆˆπΊ, show that |πœ’(𝑔)|=dim(𝑉) if and only if there is a scalar π‘βˆˆβ„‚ such that πœ‹(𝑔)𝑣=𝑐𝑣 for all π‘£βˆˆπ‘‰.

(b) Show that 𝑔 is in the center 𝑍(𝐺) if and only if |πœ’(𝑔)|=πœ’(1) for every irreducible character πœ’ of 𝐺.
